GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS; PAY.
MINISTER MAKES CORRECTION
} '’ .(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. ci, on " *T- A.. Millar desires tho followinig" correction ,to be made in a report of—his. speech wired from Dunedin on Wednesday: “In the report of •my speech, in that portion dealing with the railways, I am made to say that the railways did not pay. I never; made any such statement, and the.reports in tli© “Otago Daily Times” and “Star’’ will verify this.' I have repeatedly, both in Parliament and in the country, said t the railways had now reached!. a paying point, and the railways statement makes this very clear. What I did say. was "that,if the railways did ‘ not pay any deficiency would have tot be paid out of the consolidated fund. I shall: be obliged if you will make the necessary correction.”
j" MR. MASSEY IN THE SOUTH. A BIG MEETING~AT TIMARU. TIMARU, Nov. 17. Mr. Massey addressed' ai meeting of from 1600 to 1800 persons last night. -He had a most attentive and appretaiatiye audience.. He .spoke . generally on the Knee of his speech, at Winton, with some difference of treatment and emphasis. He was frequently applauded, and turned the few - hostile interjections to account. Some questions Were asked, and he replied. A motion of thanks was proposed, with the Jtddition that a change of Government was necessary for the welfare of the country. •, This was carried bv a large show of hands, rejecting an amendment for a vote of thanks only. The. deputy-Mayor presided , and the Opposition candidates, for Timaitu, Temuka, Waitalki, and Oamaru were on the platform. The meeting cheered Mr Massey on his arrival, find again at the close off the meeting. A CANDIDATE RETIRES. ROTORUA, Nov. 18. Mr. Cleakard, who started' a campaign as Liberal and No-License candidate for Tauranga has retired in favor of Mr. King.
THE PREMIER’S MOVEMENTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive early tliis evening by motor car from Oamaru. To-morrow at 11. a.m. he lays the foundation stone of the Government new departmental buildings in Worcester Street, and at 3 p.m. he lays the foundation stone of the new post office at Sydenham.’.
