“A TEACHER OF HERESY.”

CLERGY AND THE BIBLE. MINISTER'S SURPRISING STATEMENT. The Rev. Douglas Price, late rector of All Saints’ Church in Brisbane, whose license was withdiawn last April by Archbishop Donaldson for writing and teaching heresy, returned to Sydney from a trip to England by Jie Ii.M.S. Otranto on November 2,3. Mr. Price is going back to Brisoane at the request- of many members >1 i. s old congregation, who have seceded from the Church of England, and started a new body, calling {themselves “Pro.tussive Christians." They a v e to all intents and purposes Unitarians, and Mr. Price hones that they will adopt tliau name. They arc at present about 500 or GOO strong. Asked how he came to lose his license, Mr. Price said that Archbishop Donaldson had, alter looking over his sermons, conic to the conclusion that they were not in accord with the Catholic faith, as taught by the Church of England. The real point was that lie did not teach the Divinity of Christ. There wore a great many clergymen in Australia, as elsewhere, who privately held exactly the same views a.s lie did on the question of the Divinity of Christ and the inspiration of the. Bible. In fact, they nearly all had very grave doubts concerning these and other matters.

Why did they not leave the Church Well, it was their bread and butter. Many were men with families, and what could they do if they left ? To hinu it had meant a big sacrifice, but he was a single man. and his case was therefore different from that of several poor clergymen he knew, who were ol the same mind as himself, but could not declare their convictions because they had large families to support, and could not throw away their living. In the same diocese in Queensland as he was located another clergyman had told Archbishop Donaldson that his position -was the same theologically as Air. Price’s, and he had asked for ..

trial, but Mr Price added nothing more was heard of the matter, because it was recognised that nearly all wen.* more or less tending the same way.
