As in other parts ol the Dominion, very great in terse-1 is being taken in this district in connection with the second ballots to lye decided in some thirty electorates to-day. Given fine weather, large crowds may therefore he expected • to witness the showing of the results from tlie huge hoard on the “Times” loony. Every effort will, as hitherto, he put forth to display the results as expeditiously and as distinctly as possible. In view of the limited number of returns to be shown, no difficulty should be experienced in this regard.
All builders are invited to attend a meeting to be held at Mr F. H. Lawton’s office, McKee's buildings, at ''■■jO o’clock to-morrow evening. J.he business of the meeting is to deal with amendments to the award asked for by the Carpenters’ Union. Yesterdav -Air AY. D. Lysnar had 1200 lambs dealt with at Messrs Nelson Bros.' works, the carcases afterwards being encased in hessian. The cost bagging is estimated at 4|<l per carcase.
The local Lands Office held a ballot at Lysnar ’s Hall yesterday for three sections situated at AA aikohu. Jli K. M Birrell, a member of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board was presentand the scrutineers were Messrs J. AY. Bright and A. S. AVachsmann. The result was as follows: —.Section 2b block 1. 221 acres O.R.P. (82 applicants). AA'm. Cooper: sections 2 and 22 block 1 (881 128 acres. AY. E. Honey; section 8 -block ], 32 acres 3 roods (29 applicants), Airs Jane Garter.
Welcome rain began to fall yesterday afternoon, and incalculable good will result. In addition the rain had the effect of quenching the bush fires which have been raging.
The Chief Postmaster advises that the telegraph and telephone arrangements for to-day will be the same as last Thursday, that- is: All telegraph and telephone offices wall be open from 7 ji.in. until 2 a.in. (unless released earlier) for the receipt and transmission of election results and other telegrams. The local telephone exchange will be open until midnight. At offices other than midnight offices telegrams from the public null be accepted at ordinary rates up to S p.m., and at urgent ’ rates thereafter At midnight offices telegrams are to be accepted at ordinary rates until midnight; after that hour at urgent rates.
Wm. Brown was yesterday charged, before Mr AA’. A. Barton, S.AI., with having assaulted Thomas Fitzgerald so as to cause him actual bodily harm. On the application of Detective Afit-r-hell accused was remanded till tomorrow. as Fitzgerald was still unable to appear.
Tlie great struggle which is at present tailing place between Stevenson, champion of the world, and George Gray, tinyoung Australian marvel, is attracting the. attention of biiliaidists the world over. The jierfer-t tables and bright and airv appearance, of Messrs Smith and Robinson V billiard parlor, in Dunlop’s Buildings, is also attracting attention. and the tables are constantly occupied by highly pleased natrons/ The Cosmopolitan Club held their annual smoke concert in the social hall last evening, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent by the large number of members and friends who attended. The President, Mr J. C. Nesbitt, occupied the chair, and in a happy little speech welcomed the visitors and hoped that all would spend a very pleasant time. During the evening various toasts were honored, including "The King." proposed by the President; ‘-Cosmopolitan Club." proposed by Air I. S. Simson and responded to by the President and the Secretary (Mr C. Amhridge): "Local Bodies." proposed by Air Ambridge ana responded to by the Alayor and Crs. Sawyer and Webb; "Licensed A’ictuallers’ Association," proposed by Air J. B. Leydon and responded to by Air H. E. Maude: "The Club Committee," and "The Ladies." A most entertaining programme was gone through, items be ing contributed by Alessrs S. Smith, J. S. Allen, S. AA'. A. Smith. T. Holdsworth and other members of the Club.
A partial change of programme is to bo made by the management of the Pa the Pictures this evening, when the best items of the scries which won 'such favor last' evening will be presented with a romantic story entitled. "Tlie Poet and the Princess," and other mcr i toriou s prod net ions.
