SANATORIUM BLAZE.
EXCITING TIME AT CAMBRIDGE-
MAIN BUILDINGS SAVED
ISPECIAL TO TIMES 1
AUCKLAND, Dec. 27
An exciting fire occurred 1 at Cambridge Sanatorium at 12 o’clock last night-. The night nurse discovered a block of buildings, comprising the store,’ harness room 4 stables and buggy shed (adjacent to the main buildings) on fire, and although l the plaice was burning fiercely, Dr. Lewis made great eiforts to prevent the fire spreading. The power house, containing a thousand pounds’ worth of machinery, was only saved through plucky work on the roof with buckets of water and extinguishers. Tlie absence of wind, probably saved the main block. Five vehicles, and most of the bigness was saved by the staff, at great risk. A largo quantity of stores was destroyed, including GOOO pickled eggs. Everyone behaved admirably, and everything was done to save other buildings. . The fire brought down the electric wires and cut off light throughout the sanatorium. There were no horses in the stables at tlio time. No cause is assigned for the outbreak. , The damage will probably sum up to £BOO or £IOOO. The glare lit up tlie country for miles around.
