LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS.
THE FISHING INDUSTRY
The oft-repeatecl complaint which las been voiced in the past as to the impossibility of securing a regular suppiv of fresh fish in Gisborne can no longer be honestly made. In fact, it is claimed that the town is better supplied than any other centre in the Dominion. Considerable enterprise has just been displayed by Mr T. A. Franks, of the Gosford Fish Depot, Peel Street, in installing an _ up-to-date ice-making plant, with which to treat the surplus supplies brought in to the depot by his steam trawler, “Gosford.” The refrigerating plant, which is a very compact one. was put in bv the Hercules Company, of Sydney, and is a miniature copy of that in use at the local freezing works, the chilling being done by the ammonia process. The motor power is supplied by a 7£ h.p. Tangye oil engine, and the plant is capable of manufacturing a ton of ioe a day. Last week 1500 bundles of fish were treated at the depot, and as many as 1900 bundles have 'been put through in a single week. One great advantage of the chilling plant is that country orders cam be supplied packed, in ice, so that the fish arrive at tlieir destination, in as fresh a state as when they left the water. It is Mr Frank’s intention to add a plant for smoking fish to his already well-apopinted depot, and when this is done a superior article to that which is so largely imported , will be procurable locally at a cheaper price.
