THE BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.

A VISIT OF INSPECTION

A visit of inspection was .made Friday and Saturday by the Mayor (Mr W. Petti©) and the Borough Engineer (Mr A. J. Paterson) to the headworks of the water supply near the source or the Te Arai river. The .party, accompanied by the waterworks turncock, went thoroughly over the four miles between the headworks and the present intake at Floods Crossing on Friday, returning to Waingake the same evening, where the night was spent in the Borough cottage. Speaking to a “Times” reporter "on his return ~o town on Saturday, the Mayor said the visit had been a most interesting one, which should result in service to the borough. They had gone over the line on the eastern bank of the stream above flood mark, where it was proposed to shift the pipes from the bed of the stream, and-had. fully discussed the best means of making the alteration. They , had also looked out suitable sites for a storage reservoir. From what he had seen, His Worship stated that. h© was more than ever convinced that the intake should be at the headworks. There was more water availnvle there than four miles further down, notwithstanding the number of tributaries that joined the river between. The water at the headworks had the further advantage that it was of absolutely pure quality. A gang of men were to start restoring the pipe line right away. There were sufficient pipes to keep them going for some time to come. The work of getting tli© material up the stream would cause some trouble, but there was no reason why the line should not be restored in good time. At any rate, it was intended to push on with the work as expeditiously as possible, in order that an ample supply of pure water might be available for the, borough.
