GASOMETERS COLLAPSE.
RUIN ROW OF COTTAGES. ONE FATALITY. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHTI LONDON, Jan. 8. A water tank in a gasometer at Ilkeo stone, Derby, burst, causing the gasometer to collapse, and partially demolishing a row of cottages. _ One girl was drowned, and others injured. Ill© gas ignited in the second gasometer 1 , which also collapsed, doing great damage. SHAKEN AS BY EARTHQUAKE. FLAMES LEAP HUNDREDS OF FEET. (Received Jan. 9, 11.15 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 9. Ilkeston was shaken as by an earthquake. The gasometer was flung thirty yards and the flames sprung hundreds of feet in the air. The occupants of the demolished cottages had miraculous escapes. Several buildings were burned. Debris on the railway caused the suspension of the traffic. - It is believed the gasometer yielded to the pressure of the water, *causin gthe gas to escape and ignite. The explosion burst the water holder, and the torrent flooded houses and factories.
