RECOGNISING HEROES
[per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. A meeting of the court -of directors f 1 the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand was held t-o-day. The action f the secretary in granting an appli-at-ion for twelve life buoys for Timaru /as confirmed. When the case of Jfred William Gyles (twenty-three ears of age), claim for recognition for escuing Norman Avison from drownng at Lower Hutt, Wellington, on larch Stli, 1910, came up for consideraion, Mr R. C. Bishop said that there ad previously been many meritorious ases that- it had been impossible te reognise owing to the long period that ad elapsed, and it would be impossible inder the rules to recognise the present ase. It was decided that the claim ould not be recognised!. In the case f J. Faulkner (16 years) who rescued 1 J. Brown (40) from drowning at Luckland on October 12th, 1911, it was ecicled, owing to the special gallantry n connection with the rescue, to giant . bronze medal. In the case of Daniel fohnson (26 years of age) -who atempted to rescue Win. Moffatf (35) rom drowning at Gamarang, Java, on ipril 22nd, 1911, it was decided, to efer the case to the Victorian Society o see if it was prepared to recognise he case. In regard to John Hood (14 •ears) who attempted to) rescue Thelma fdwards (34 years) from drowning at Stratford oil November • 6th, 1911, it ras decided to refer the letter back for urther evidence. In the case of George leal Dawson (23) who rescued. Horace Ivan (12 years) from drowning at fa main on November 16th, 1911, it was iecided to grant a. letter of commendation. In the case of Tlios. Kennedy -25) who rescued Wilfred Cecil Kennedy T years) from drowning at the Asli-rin-ton Ci'ossing on June 24th, 1911, it ras decided to grant a framed certifiUte. Jas. Steppen Smith (15 years) rr rescuing Guy Leslie Pinckney (8 ears) from drowning at Wellington on December 14th was granted a letter of Smmendation.
