BLUFF HARBOR.
COULD BE MADE ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S BEST.
VIEWS OOP CAPT. ENGLISH, OF THE S.S. DELPHIC.
[per press INVERCARGILL, Jan. 23. In view of the doubt which. at one time prevailed as to whether the s.s. Delphic would come to Bluff with her record cargo for that port of 3400 tons the Bluff Press interviewed Capt. English, master of the vessel, who brought her safely in.- 'Capt. English said he was pleased to find that everything he had heard about the. unsafety of the port was more or less exaggerated. He said: “I found nothing difficult in. the approach to Bluff Harbor, and! it was in no way difficult of navigation, excepting, perhaps, that at times in these latitudes one may expect boisterous weather. The entrance to Bluff harbor possesses some of the finest landmarks one could find in any part of the world. Dog Island lighthouse and Bluff itself both are splendid marks for locating the entrance. A clear passage with plenty of water extends from fairway buoy, at the entrance, up to the middle reach, and although comparatively narrow, there is plenty of room for the largest ship to enter in perfect safety at the proper state of the tide, which is on the first stream of the.ebb.” He described the soundings which he had personally made, and suggested in detail improvements by wliich he said Bluff harbor being so handily situated could be made one of tlie finest harbors in New Zealand.
