CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, Jan. 23.
The Wanganui Caledonian Society’s 29th annual gathering was held yesterday in glorious weather. There was an enormous crowd present. A. Holmes won the mile and the half-mile cycling, and M. Ford the lap dash. In the 120 yards amateur race W. Darby wou from J. Goss in 11 4-sth secs. Both are local men. R. Opie_ was fourth. The 75 yards amateur race was won by J. Stohr, with H. Martis second; time 7 4-stli secs. C. Breed won the mile flat in 4min 6sec. A. Evenson came first, J. A. Campbell 2nd, and A. C. Kitto 3rd in the 120 yards hurdles, which was run in 18secs. The quarter mile fiat resulted in a win for H. Martis. the time being 51secs. The half-mile flat was won by L. McDonald, time 2min 2 4-ssecs. The 220 yards
bracelet was won by J. Gosa (14 yards), with R. Opio 2nd, and V. Williams 3rd; timo 22 2-sth secs. Tho furlong hurdles resulted: L. Laurence 1, A. C. Kitto 2, Evenspn 3. Honors in the dancing events' were shared by J. McKenzie and J. McKechnie, and in music by R. McKeclmio and C. McArtuey. A feature of the sports was some really fine wrestling, chief of which was the bout between Alec Bain and Moana Paratene, for the championship of New Zealand and £SO aside. It was won by the former, after a scientific exhibition. Moana secured the first:., fall, but Bain got the next two, and won tho contest. '
