A well known Hawke’s Bay resident present at the past two week’s racing was heard to remark ,after having critically eyed the many pretty frocks of the ladies, that, taken collectively, the Gisborne ladies were much better dressed than the ladies who attended the Hawke’s Bay race meetings. The friends of Miss Helen Busby, who was thrown from her horse last week at Tokomaru Bay and received concussion of the brain, will be pleased to hear she is slowly recovering. The engagement is announced in Auckland of Miss Beryl Keesing, of Auckland, and Mr John Parker, of Napier. ‘ Mr and Mrs Straclian, who intend to settle in the Hawke’s Bay district, will be much .missed by their many friends here. Bishop and Mrs Averill passed through Gisborne on Wednesday. The engagement of Miss E. Baird Luxton, artist, of Christchurch, to the Rev. Nils Fribreg, of Kaikoura. (formerly of.Makotuku), is announced.
The engagement is announced of Miss M. V. Willis, daughter of Mr I>’. Willis, to Mr George H. Colwhl, ,»f Napier. The Premier of New South Wales’ :cn and daughter, Mr and Miss McGowen, are touring New Zealand. Dr and Mrs Bowerbank (Wellington) were staying at Waikaremoana last week. Many spoilt frocks will be reckoned against Thursday afternoon’s rain, also hats. It was much regretted (with due respect to the parched country) that the rain couldn’t have held off long enough to allow people to reach their homes in a better state of mind than that of drowned rats. Mrs C. Gray is visiting Auckland. Mrs and Misses Bullard (2) left for their new home at New Plymouth last Sunday. The engagement is announced of Nurse E. Chisholm, Public Hospital, Wellington, to Mr Claude W. Lodge, Pukekohe, Auckland, writes a Wellington correspondent. Miss Campbell, London, is the guest of the Misses Sherratt, Swarthmoor. Mr and Mrs J. R- Kirk are staying at their town house for a few days. Mr and Mrs Canning have returned to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs F. Lysnar, has returned from Auckland. Mrs Herd accompanies Lieutenant Herd during his visit to Gisborne in connection with the band contest. Mr and Mrs Symons, of Gisborne, are visiting Christchurch, and were the guests of Mrs Pyne.
