TE KARAKA SCHOOL PICNIC. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Glorious weather favored Thursday’s picnic in connection with the Te Karaka School. The site chosen was a lovelv spot on the Kangatirn river Mu', which, with its beautiful willows and splendid running course, proved an ideal picn’Ccing ground. The gathering was the largest ever seen at a local picnic, iha attendance being e.-rimr-ted at close upon ■IOO. Parent.-, and Drirds rolled' up :u splendid style, and one and all joined in the fun and helped to give the juveniles a really good time?*. Messrs A. AL Lewis (chairman), Gedys, Crimmin, Brown, AYarren and Pitcher (members of the School Committee) and the teachers all worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering, and valuable assistance was also given by Afessrs G. T. Sef'ton, AY. Powell. G. Williams and Dr Wi Pena. The catering was in the capable hands of Air F. Clayton, and left nothing to be desired. The ladies present formed themselves into a committee and took charge of the food arrangements, all working hard to appease the appetites of the juveniles —a herculean task. Alessrs D. J. Barry and G. IT. Williams had generously donated a supply of soft drinks, which were greatly appreciated. The Races. The*principal races resulted:— Girls’ 100yds Championship. — Gertie Green 1, Elsie Allen 2. Bovs’ 100yds Championship.—J. Patty 1. AV. Toy 2. 220vds Championship. — It. Bell 1, J. Patty 2. Single Ladies’ Race. —Aliss Pitcher 1, Miss Hine Ruru 2. Old Boys’ Race. —-las. Graham scr. 1. E Gordon 3yds 2. Married Alien's Race.—P. .T. Sexton 1. A. E. Gibson 2. In the married women’s race the competitors were handicapped in accordance with the number of children they had, receiving one yard start for each child. The race resulted Airs Crimmin lyd 1, Airs MeAlahon syds 3. The Prize List. During the afternoon Air A. AL Lewis presented the prizes won during tiie year the large crowd present taking a keen interest in the proceedings. Each child in the infant classes was presented with a book, the prizes in the other classes being awarded on tbe marks gained during 1911. Best writing in standards 4,5, and G (also presented by At. McMahon, esq.): Mildred Saudlant. , , . , „Progress prizes: Esmeralda Olson* Lionel Lewis. ' , . . .1 Air G. F. Bell presented two special prizes for the boy and girls making most progress during past year ,the winners being Noel Gedys and Ida V\ escon. A pleasing feature of the ceremony was the presentation of gold medals to Basil and Edward Flundleby, two brothers who have not missed one lutlf-day during the past live years—a very creditable record. A special prize for good conduct was awarded to Doris Allen, and Miss Pickering’s special .prizes were awarded to Edna Clayton, Alice Pickett and Jack Green. Air H.. Mortimer presented a beautiful book to the best athlete in the school, the winner being Jack Patty. Before the proceedings closed hearty cheers were given for Mr Pattullo, who had placed his beautiful grounds at the committee’s disposal; for the donors .or special prizes; for those contributing to and assisting at the picnic, and tor Master Eric Brown, an ex-pupil, who sent his hard-won bag of 500 odd marbles for distribution among the boys of the school. The happy party dispersed at 5 o'clock, one and all proclaiming the picnic to have been the best yet held in connection with the school.
