THE BREAKWATER EXTENSION.

LETTERS FROM THE CONTRACTORS. PROGRESS PAYMENT PASSED. Regarding the extension of the breakwater, the Gisborne Harbor Board at its meeting yesterday received letters from the contractors, Messrs Langbnds and Co., relative to the pfi'rcha&q of plant and: material own.ect i»y the Board in order to assist them with tlisir work. Messrs Langlands and Co., Ltd., stated in their letter that they undWstooul that the Board would be prepared to sell the locomotive which was last used six years ago for the purpose of driving a 'stone crusher and which since that time had remained idle. This would not improve matters.' The last certificate was issued for 80lbs of, steam. The tube plate wanted renewing, and the engine required a general overhaul, which would entail great expense. The engine would greatly facilitate the execution of their contract, and they were prepared to purchase it for £l6O, providing the Inspector of Machinery would grant a certificate for sufficient steam for haulage purposes. They would accept the Board’s offer m regard to hire of the five-ton, steam crane at £1 per week. As the firm anticipated duplicating the existing railway lino at the lower and top ends of the breakwater, and required approximately 1000 ft of rails, they wanted to know if the Board would lend l them the use of same, together with the trucks at present oil the breakwater. In a further letter the same company applied for a progress payment of £636 3s 6d under tlie conditions of contract. ’idie claim was computed on local prices, and was made up as follows; Material £395 10s 4d, machinery £453 and office and store £395; total, £872 7s. They asked for payment of 50 per cent, of this amount, £436 3s 6d, and the return of the £2OO deposited when they applied for the contract. The Engineer’s valuation was as follows: Timber £246, machinery £245, total £SOO, 50 per cent. £250, plus refund of tender deposit, £2O0 —total £450, which he . recommended: should be paid. No advance could be made on cement until it had been tested in accordance with the contract or on office and store until insured, and the policy lodged with the Beard. He also recommended the Board to sell tl\e locomotive. The Engineer's recommendations were adopted.
