CONTROL OF CHARITABLE AID.
HOSPITAL BOARD DECIDES ON APPOINTING A COMMITTEE. TO ADMINISTER AID. Although there is fortunately an absence of poverty in Gisborne and district, the steady increase in the population lias brought about a consequential increase in the demand for charitable aid, and the Board is finding the administering of aid a pressing business. To relieve the position Dr. Collins propounded a new scheme which came before the Board at last night’s meeting and was adopted unanimously, Mr Jex Blake seconding the motion. The text of the scheme is as follows : “The Charitable Aid Committee shall consist of not more than four members of the Board, for a period of three months (exclusive of the chairman of the Board), two of such members to retire each three months. Such two to be decided by lot and afterwards by rotation. “The Committee shall administer the charitable aid of the district on lines to be determined by the Board.
“The 'Committee shall .supervise the general management of the Old Men’s Home. “The Committee shall hold its meetings weekly and on such day and hour as shall bo determined. “The Committee shall control all dietary rules and regulate the duties of all employees at the home, and see their work is carried out satisfactorily and efficiently. “The Committee shall have power to distribute any relief required between meetings and report to the Board. “The Committee shall make full inquiries into all complaints hi connection with the institution and report to the Board. “The Committee shall, have power to suspend any salaried officer under its jurisdiction pending the decision of the Board, and in the meantime may appoint a properly qualified and efficient person to officiate in the room of the person so suspended. “The Committee shall examine all tenders for supplies for the institution and general relief, and shall make such recommendation as may •he deeped proper as to their acceptance or otherwise. “The Committee shall forward all accounts in connection with the work under their control to the Board for payment, the correctness
being first certified to by the responsible officer appointed for that purpose and initialled by the Chairman.”
The Chairman (Ca.pt. Tucker), DrCollins and Messrs Holden, Jex Blake, Johnston were appointed the first committee, to meet to-day week.
