THURSDAY COMPETITION.

GISBORNE DEFEATS ST. PATRICKS.

The Thursday competition was continued yesterday ■when Gisborne (Blue) defeated St. Patricks (Green) by 10 points to 3- There was a fair attendance. but the weather was dull during the early stages of the match, and heavy rain set in. after the interval and continued till play concluded. The game was uninteresting except during the last quarter or an hour, when St? Patricks made determined efforts to equalise the scores, blit they were unsuccessful. Play was in midfield until G. Pollock took a mark and the game was taken to St. Patricks’ territory, where J. Pollock attempted to pot. Parker secured the ball and passed to Ski lien, who kicked out in the centre. Gisborne again returned, but f ron } scrum the Green forwards shifted operations to the centre, where Tocker kicked out. After « series of line outs and scrums in midfield Gisborne was penalised through J. Pollock being off-side, but Skilled, who took the kick, did not gain much advantage. Prom a scrum the ball went'out to G. Pollock, who by a good kick took play to St. Patricks’ twenty-five, but Atkinson (returned the ball to 'the centre.. By loose work the ball was then taken to Gisborne’s quarter, where a penalty kick enabled them to clear. Gisborne were later penalised, and from the kick C- Pollock took the ball and kicked to Skillen. He fob , lowed up fast and smothered the re- . turn, but eventually Atkinson kicked out. ’ From a scrum a dangerous passing rush among the Gisborne backs was spoiled by G. 'The hall was later kicked over the line by McLean and Wyllie forced. St. Patricks were pressing their opponents towards the conclusion of the spell. On resuming play was in neutral territory for some time but gradually Gisborne were forced to defened their goal line, and after a melee the Blues were compelled to force. St. Patricks again returned to the attack, and after a passing rush Gisborne were penalised and Skillen had an unsuccessful kick at goal. Good play by St. Patrick’s forwards again forced Gisborne hack into their own territory, but good work by J. Pollock and 'Cocker shifted operations to the Greens’ twenty-five, where Wyllie kicked over the line and the hall went into touch-in-goal. The Green forwards then took play into Gisborne’s quarter where C. Pollock got the hall and found the line near Gisborne’s goal line, hut the Blues were penalised. C- Pollock secured the hall and kicked and Smith took a mark, locker failed to field the ball, and Smith, Stagpoole and Spence got possession and took it along the field at- their toes. Smith eventually scoring. Guthrie failed to convert- Tocker Inter broke away with the ball and took it to St. Patrick’s twenty-five, where the Greens were penalised, and he had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Th© Green forwards later invaded their opponents’ quarter, where after a scrum the ball was kicked over the dead ball line. J. Pollock later kicked the ball un the line to Daly, and, following up fast, he had him in trouble. C. Pollock secured possession, but lost the oval as he was about to cross the line. A scrum followed, from which St. Patricks were enabled to clear. The.ball was again taken to St. Patrick’s line, but from a line out Smith secured it and shifted operations to tlie centre. Here loose play followed during which Davis got the hall and dribbled it over his opponents’ line, where he picked it up and scored behind the posts. G. Pollock converted and time was called. Mr M. Osborne was referee.
