ON THE EMPLOYERS.

WAGES.AND CONDITIONS OF LABOR. Yesterday morning the secretary of the Poverty Bay Freezing Works Industrial Union of Workers handed to the employers (the Gisborne Sheepfa miens Frozen jMeat Company, anti Messrs Nelson Bros) the proposed schedule of rates of pay and conditions of labor. The schedule contained the • following: Hours of Labor.—(l) Unless herein otherwise provided, men shall, worn eight hours per “day between -tne hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., all time worked beyond these hours to be paid for at overtime rates: (2) All work beyond eight hours for tne first five days'to be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter; all work after 12 o’clock Oil, Saturdays to be paid for at the. rate of time and a half;'(3) The starting hour shall be regulated from time to time by the employer; (4) Men working in shifts shall work eight hours out of the twenty-four at ordinary rates of pay; (5) No "longer period than five hours shall he worked between meals, except m the ease of finishing, when 30 minutes’ extra may be worked. Bates of Pay.—The minimum rates of pay for the several classes shall be as follow : —Cooling floor general hands Is 3d per hour; graders Is 6d, honors Is Gd; trimmers Is 4d; guthouse hands and truckmen ds 4d; paunch cutters Is 4.pi, hide washers Is 4-id, fat-liouse hands Is 4 id. blood and manure hands Is sd, all-beef slaughtermen’s assistant Is 4pl. ' Fellmongery Hands.—Wool prpssors and general floor hands Is 3d. painters, fleshers, seudders, wool driers, all doliymen, wool scourers. Trimmers, Wringers, and Skin Truckers Is 4£d; pelt elasser Is 9d, .piece or’ jiie men Is 3d; or piece work rates at lid per lb. (dry wool) from November to March; after March, 1-Jd per lb; pullers 4s Gd per 100. One learner may be put on to four pullers, or fraction of four thereafter. Learners to be paid at piece work rates. Freezing chamber 'hands Is 9d per hour. After the first two hours time and a half to be paid for overtime. Preserving Department : —Tinsmiths Is 4£d per hour; other hands Is 3d. Youths and boys : under 15 years of age 12s Gd per week; up to IG, 18s; up to 17. 2ns; up to 19 years, 30s; over 19 years 40s.' Miscellaneous „ Workmen. —Coopers Is Gd per hour; .lime burner Is od; tally-men on shoot Is Gd; firemen £3 10s per week, with 14 days’ leave per annum on full pay; greasers £3 10s per week, with 14 days’ leave per annum on full pay; boiler work and tine cleaning. Is Gd per hour. Nightwatehmen, £3 10s per week, with 14 days’ leave on. full pay; hours, from 4 p.m. till 12 p.m-, and from 12 p.m. till 8 a.m. Carters, Is per hour; sheep ho 60.3 per week; shepherd, 70s per week; bag room hands Is 3d per hour; all unspecified labor, Is 3d. Mechanics. —Watch engineer, £4 4s per week and overtime; seven shifts if required ;■ 14 days’ leave per annum on full pay; each watch to have a greaser. All drivers other than watch engineers, 11s; fitters 11s Gd; moulders and blacksmiths 11s. Holidays.—The following davs. shall bo observed as holidays; Ist January, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Faster Monday, Labor Day, and tln.> reigning Sovereign’s Birthday; also two other days to be mutually 1 arranged between the companies and the union. All work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday, or Sundays shall be paid for at the rate of double time, and on other holidays at the rate of time and a-half. General Clauses. —The list of general clauses includes the following; A minimum of two hours shall be paid to men wlio are called out to work for less than two hours. Where contracts are let, all contractors shall pay the men employed by them the minimum rate of washes presribed hv this award. The employers shall make it a binding term of any such contract that the oonj tractors shall comply with this condition. ■Smocks, gloves, and all materials for leggings and aprons to be supplied by employers to such men as may require them. All waiting time to be paid at minimum rates. All work clone in chambers or < biller to he paid for at chamber ratesAll men employed in Departments who have to start early mornings which necessitates a spell for breakfast, shall lie paid for such spell, unless the spell allowed is one hour. A clause provides for under-rate permits. Preference to unionists’ clauses are submitted and the term of the award , is named as two years.
