A BOOM BUSTED!
MR. ROOSEVELT REPUDIATES THE CONVENTION.
WILL LEAD AN INDEPENDENT FICHT.
AN APPEAL TO EVERY HONEST CITIZEN. “FIGHT OUT THE CAMPAIGN, WIN OR LOSE!”
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] CHICAGO, June 20.
There was a dramatic scene between Mr. Flynn and Mr. Roosevelt, when the former shouted, “You ought to have bolted long ago. _ It may too late now, but as they are going to swindle you, anyhow, you must make an attempt.” Subsequently, Mr Flynn resigned from the committee
Advices from Chicago say that “Roosevelt’s boom is busted.” - The Rooseveltians are now anxious to secure a compromise candidate, but the Taftites are holding aloof, seeing victory ahead. Mr. Roosevelt has repudiated the Republican Convention, and declares that he intends to lead an Independent fight for the nomination.
WAITING FOR THE BOLT.
CONJECTURES FROM CHICAGO.
SPEECH BY MR. ROOSEVELT.
Received June 21, 11.5 p.m.) CHICAGO, June 21
Owing to the certainty of losing office it is unlikely that more than 200 Rooseveltites will participate in the bolt. The Illinois delegation, by 56 votes to two, decided not to participate. The Ohio and lowa delegates expressed the same opinion.
A meeting of the Wisconsin and Californian delegates favored the new party. It is evident that Mr Roosevelt and Governor Hadley are desirous of restraining the more ardent adherents from precipitate action, which would threaten financial danger. To secure the Presidency on an Independent ticket, Mr Roosevelt will require £1,000,000, and it is doubtful if his friends will stand the strain.
Apart from the Rooseveltite protest to the Credentials Committee, a most definite indication of the probable action is give by Mr Roosevelt’s address to his supporters, including two delegates from each of his states. He said : If an honestly-elected majority of the Convention nominates me as the Republican candidate, I shall accept. If a few do and the remainder nominate me as a Progressive on a Progressive platform and the general feeling among the progressives favors my nomination, I shall accept. “In either case, I shall appeal to every honest citizen to fiht the campaign through, win or lose.
