THE KOGHAN MASSACRE. 140 BULGARIANS MURDERED, WHOLESALE SLAUGHTER FOR THREE HOURS. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received Aug. 12, 12.15 a.m.) ROME, Aug. 11. Details of the Kochan massacre show that the town was full, it being market day. The first explosion which occurred in the bazaar killed 11 people, and the second, some five minutes later, caused indescribable panic.
Bands of Mussulmans armed with guns, revolvers and clubs butchered the Bulgarians wholesale for three hours under the eyes of the authorities.
When the troops appeared, instead of arresting the murderers, they searched for Bulgarians till nightfall. It is estimated that 140 were killed. while the number of wounded is unknown. Next morning a hundred bodies wero laid out in the courtyard of the Bulgarian Church. There were no arrests except of innocent Christians.
The “Times’ ” Vienna correspondent attributes the Kochan massacre to Bulgarian revolutionaries exploding bombs to provoke Mussulman reprisals, thus hoping to compel the Bulgarian and great Powers to intervene.
