NOTES ON THE DAY. [BY TELEGRAPT -SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. Tho Canterbury. Jockey Club’s good fortune deserted it to-day, when the Metropolitan meeting was continued at Riccarton. Rain set in early this morning and continued steadily throughout the forenoon. It was not particularly heavy, but it was persistent, and although it ceased about half-way through the afternoon there had been sufficient rain to make the track heavy. The result of the Middleton Hurdles showed how good White Cockade is in the mud, for he was always in ft good position and finding a gap at the last fence drew away comfortably from the first day’s winner, Fashion Plate. There were 13 starters in the Criterion Handicap, which followed, and Heatherbrae was made a much more pronounced favorite than Soldiers’ Chorus, Peirene and Stardancer being the most fancied of the others. A good race was witnessed, though Soldiers’ Chorus non in good style from Peirene, Ceylon (finishing nicely) and Heatherbrae being third and fourth respectively. Merry Frank and The Cornet were next. Bootle stopped badly after running prominently '.veil down the straight. A nice field of 17 tivo.-year-olds lined up for the Irwell Handicap, the Welcome Stakes winner Peronilla, with the top-weight, carrying n ore money than Sir George Clifford’s pair Gleneannich and Briar Patch and Mr Greenwood’s pair Cherubini and Zeus, the other well-backed ones of the lot being Mr Watt’s Tatterley and Mr :J. W. Skinner’s Fender, who Avon in business-like style coming at the right end and defeating Zeus, Avho shoAvcd a good turn of speed. Inmer, an outsider, also by Martian, finished third, Martian’s progeny thus filling the places. Both Peronilla and Tatterley shoAvecl their speed and were in front at the end of tAvo and a-Ealf furlongs, but the weights told or possibly the going, or both. We have had some very fine Derby colts in Riccarton at various times and it would be idle to say that any one of the seA T en that stripped to-day filled the eye so Avell as some of the fields seen on the same ground. All the same they looked a decidedly useful lot.

The Stewards’ Stake winner Bon Reve was probably not thought to bo so good as his stable mate and relative Bon Ton by his owners or by the public, but there was cne thing .early manifested at the meeting—his rare turn of speed. Autmnnus carried more money than the Stead combination. but was quite the disappointment of the race as he was the generally accredited best two-year-old of last season. Though he did not meet Our King Haskayne was very well backed, and he made a very good run at the business end in an endeavor to reach Bon Reve, but could not sustain it far enough. Brown Owl, Sir George Clifford’s filly, surprised many by beating Autumnus and Gnome’s position in front of both Autumnus and Bon Ton was equally surprising. As a matter of fact the three colts' Autumnus,- Bon Ton, and Carolus were the last to finish, the first and second prize money going to geldings and the third prize to a filly. The Juvenile Plate was practically won from end to end by the Austral-ian-bred filly Ventura by the defunct English sire Traquair from Sonoma, who, at two years’ old, won for her owner, Air E. J. .Watt, the Breeders Plate and Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick last spring. The consistent Stepniak filly, The Hague, lasted long enough to beat the faster-finishing filly Bonny Helen for second place. Nightwatch, who was favorite on the first day for the AVelcome Stakes, was fourth. There were sixteen starters in the Aletropolitan Handicap. Alasterpiece being made a better favorite than Sinapis, Coroniform. Undecided and old Sandstream being the best sup-

ported of the ,others. It was a fine race. Bobrikoff Avas in the lead practically all the Avay, but Goklfinder Avas never far aAvay and caught him near the turn ’and the pair came in together. In an exciting finish they ran a dead lieat, Sinapis, as in tho Cup, coming Aveil over the concluding stages securing third place clear of Allegory. Mira, Sea Queen and Odessa were the next to finish. 'Ooroniform ran prominently for a mile and a furlong though Bobrikoff and ’Goldfinder Avere outsiders both have raced avoU before, though of late Avith bad, luck. The Epsom High Weight Welter saw the largo field of 21 go out, Avith Stepniak or Royal Artillery gelding Query favorite, My Lawyer, Peary and Mount Victoria next in request. The Monoform three-year-old Potoa was next in demand. A fine start Avas Avitnessed, Hermia, Pilgrims’ Way and Distinction, Avith Query, Cr-own' Pearl and Potoa all av? 11 in line. BeloAv the distance Query was showing clear of the rest, but Potoa canio AA'itli a good run and heading him dreAv aAvay and Avon nicely, My Lawyer finishing third clear of CroAvn Pearl. The placed trio was separated by short intervals of daylight. Bracken and. Teviotdale following CroAvn Pearl home in order. Potoa is one of tho usefvil three-year-olds that competed at tho meeting and ran quite up to his form of the opening day.
