THE GISBORNE BOROUGH COUNCIL AND CR. COLLINS.

i T'l tvs EDITOR.) Sir,—l ha- a vat -bed with much anxiety the proceedings of the Gisborne Borough Council lately, in view of the promise made by Cr. Collins anent reform on his pyrrhic victory a few months ago that “1 will surprise you, ladies and gentlemen.” The fluent councillor has certainly kept his word, but not in the direction his supporters expected, for we find from press reports that the wordy gentleman has attended the meetings since his re-election for a verybrief period or has not appeared on the scene at all. Of course he can be excused from retiring from one meeting at an early satge — I refer to the one when he and his advisory committee were well and duly given to understand that they did not solely control borough affairs. But we have- seen boastful reports in the press since about meetings and prospective meetings of Cr. Collins’ advisory committee, but their schemes are evidently in the ehry alis stage, and likely-to remain” there. 1 am prompted to refer to this matter on account of a paragraph you reprinted from a Timaru journal, where it states that a record was established in connection with the. business of the Timaru Borough Council, which occupied an hour and a quarter. Perhaps the latter Council, like our own, has placed a time limit to the speeches, and that may account for the record so proudly claimed by your Timaru contemporary.—l am, etc., GIVIS.
