GERARD CONVICTED. [PRESB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] INVERCARGILL, Feb. 25. The hearing of charges against Colin Gerard of theft of a. motor tyre and other motor goods was continued in the police court Ibis morning, before Mr. Cnrickshank, S.M. Mr. 11. A. ■McDonald, solicitor for Gerard, gave evidence denying that he and Gerard had visited Myross Bush to see William Hazlett, from whom Gerard alleged he had received the stolen tyre. l Counsel detailed his movements on | t/lie day on which the visit was alleged | to have been made, and called witnesses to substantiate his own evidence that he could not possibly have been in Myross Bush on the day indicated. The Magistrate remarked that he regarded William Hazlett’s statement about Mr. McDonald as quite irrelevant. Samuel Hazlett, brother of William Hazlett, deposed that Gerard had taken out his cheque book and said that he would give his brother £ 100 if he would swear he got the tyre from Christchurch.
The Magistrate said that no doubt the tyre was stolen, and convicted Gerard. Sentence was deferred pending the Probation. Officer’s report. Gerard was further charged with the theft of three tubes, but owing to lack of identification the case wa.s dismissed .
