MR HERBIES AT TIMARU. [PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] TIMARU, May 1. Mr. Merries (Minister for Railways) in the- course of a tour of inspection of the southern line, reached Tim-aru this afternoon, and opened the new ambulance hall with appreciative remarks on the value of brigade work. A deputation of business men waited on the Minister to a.sk for an improvement in the facilities for working the. trucks on the wharf and also an enlargement of the- passenger station and shunting yard. Mr. Merries pnunised that an officer accompanying him shall inquire into the matter of wharf facilities. As to enlarging the station, that- depended on whether a .special loan could he raised- for such purposes in several centres, and they must await Mr. •lames Allen’s advice about the subject. Deputations pointed out the inconvenience of the twopence charge to enter tho platform when exresses are in, as it is difficult to get tickets, and asked that an annual ticket be issued, at a reasonable rate. The Minister thought this a reasonable request. A deputation from the Navy League asked for an excursion train from Waimnte to Lyttelton to convey South Canterbury school children to Lyttelton to see the warship if rough weather prevents their .seeing her at Timaru. The train was promised if it- is really d esired. There will be other deputations tomorrow morning, and then the Minister inspects the Fairlie. line.

HON W. FRASER ON WEST COAST. WESTPORT, May I. Hon W. Fraser, Minister for Mines, was entertained at luncheon by tho citizens to-day. He visited Seddonvipe in tho aft-ernoiio, where he received various -deputations—one in regard to boring near the old' Cardiff Company’s property with a view to lengthening the life of the Seddonville State mine.
