COOK COUNTY COLLEGE.
INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The following is the report of the Inspector (Mr D. A. Straclian) on the Cook County College: ‘Teachers. —Miss R.ees, M.A., L.L.8., Miss Crawford and Miss Desborough. Elementary Agriculture.— There are gardens, vegetable and flower. Handwork. —Brush-work, plasticine modelling. Other Subjects. Latin, French, algebra, geometry, English, literature. Grounds and Conveniences.—Satisfactory. Buildings. —Commodious and comfortable. Condition of Apparatus. —Satisfactoiy. A large number of the pupils were absent owing to the prevalence of epidemic (German measles): of 38 on the roll 22 were present. The school was opened in September, 1912. Such a school as this, drawing pupils from many sources, naturally proves, somewhat difficult of organisation. I found the pupils fluent in reading, of diversified quality in writing and spelling, able to express themselies freely in the essay, thopgh weak in grammar, satisfactory in recitation and possessed of some knowledge of a period of English literature (Milton to Pope). Arithmetic moderate. Those taking French are making excellent progress; Latin very fair, and, judging by tlie written work,, algebra and geometry also very fair. The health of tho children is an object of solicitude, physiology is taught and drill (dumb bell) with marching regularly practised. Singing, an extra subject, was taken by half of tho pupils present. I was pleased, with the drawing and the progress, in need ework The tone and discipline weie excellent. The dormitories are weU arranged. The teachers are earnest, skilful and evidently anxious to give the pupils a sound education, and ro the short time the school has been in operation have attained a reasonable degree of efficiency.” _______
