COAST FOOTBALL.
TOKOAIA.iIU BAY MATCH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TOKOMARU BAY, July 24. One of the gala days in the matter of football at Tokomam Bay eventuated to-day when two teams from Tologa Bay came to Tokomaru to try conclusions in a friendly game with our City Club and City juniors respectively. Locally, we naturally endeavored to put in the field.the best teams we could raise as it was generally understood that the Tologaites were, to put it mildly, “warm.” Tile expectations were justified as. although the scores appear as they do. the playing, particularly in the senior match, was as lively as would he seen anywhere. There was a good attendance, the day beino an ideal one for football and the a hide afternoon was a lingo stieces. Tologa. was invited to bring along a referee, who turned up in the person, of Air 11. Nelson who refereed the juniors. Air Geo. Tankard referred the seniors. Both referees made their first appearance on this ground and it- must be very satisfactory to them to know that their decisions were never questioned and even amongst the: spectators, many of whom were old players and in some cases referees tile general exjiression of approval of their handlinor of tho gani-tj was a fair indication of their fitness. Play commenced at one o’clock when till' juniors tok the field, and played the curtain raiser. Tokomaru losing the toss kicked- off’ and kept Tologa very busy tie fending their goal line. They managed eventually to get. on the agressive with the ball which ended in Newman almost scoring a try, his opposing wing making a feeble attempt to tackle him. A scrum ensued, from which Tokomaru invaded Tologa’s territory. The play was then of a give and take nature for some time, Toko making strenuous efforts to score. Eventually from a tight scramble D. Grant got over the line and scored. Wilson -failed to convert, when the bell rang for half-time. Scores: Tokomaru 3. Tologa nil. On resuming Tologa kicked off resulting in a serum. George Oates secured and kicked liinb. Pine followed up fast and: narrowly missed scoring, Tologa touching down. Give and take play followed. Toko, were on the aggressive alter a few minutes’ play but splendid play by B. Agnew saved liis side from a dangerous position. Tho game at, this stage was fairly fast and even, both sides using their utmost endeavors to score until the call of time. Final resu.t : Tokomaru 3, Tologa nil.
SENIORS. „ TOKOMARU CITY Y. TOLOGA CITY. Tologa kicked off and whilst each side was endeavoring to find the strength of the other there was not much doing. The game eventually opened up and at this stage the Tologa. backs mulled badly, Baker and A. Hale following up smartly completely heat the opposing hacks, Arthur Hale scoring the first try which F. Hale converted. Score: City 5, Tologa 0. After this score Tologa, who had been playing tho more aggressive game, made things still more likely. City up to this time had! not been playing with their lytual dash among the forwards, while the backs seemed unable* to get going. Tologa’s aggressiveness was rewarded at this stage hy Mason scoring through fast following. Lockwood kicking a goal. Civ 5, Tologa 5. City now began to warm up to their work and kept I’ologu busy, when linker .secured ami scored. Fret Hal© failed! with the kick. Tim * was called, tho scores King: City 8 Tologa 5Right from the* jump m the second half City were out for scores and several points wore missed through bad handling and over-anxious play. Tologa seemed out ol condition and had evidently made the first spell too hot and! were on the defensive lor some time. Kenyan gathered nicely about 30 yards from Tologa’s goal line and with two nice feints and a good swerve had his opponents puzzled and* scored the neatest try of the match. F. Hale missed converting. Kcrwan's play for Tokomaru and Lockwood’s lor Tologa stood out conspicuously right through. City 1.1, Tologa 5. Immediately after Tologa 'kicking off, Joe Gates accepting, passed to Kerwaii, back to Oates and on to Mill who scored at the corner. _ A!organ. secured the extra points. City 14 Tologa 5. Tologa tried hard to even matters up and soine nice work followed. They were unfortunate as they only succeeded in putting on another try •which was not converted, the final scores being Tokomaru 14, Tologa. 8. Tito game throughout was played in the most friendly spirit and the* writer understands that a return match is to be played at-Tologa at an early date.
