(BY “VIVIENNE. ”) The hostesses at golf last Saturday were Airs H. E. Bright and Misses MeCrcclic and Bull. Their delicious and dainty afternoon tea was much appreciated. Mr and Airs K. S. Williams left For the South by the s.s. Tarawora last Wednesday. Miss Lillie Ala fariane, of Hawke's Bay, is visiting friends in Gisborne. Mrs Nolan ami Miss Hazel Nolan have been visiting in the South. Airs Reeve invited some of her friends to aftern-oon tea last week when an opportunity was taken of saying good-bye to Airs La-mont Gurr, who lias since left for Auckland. Air R ,S. Floranoe, S.AL, is at present up the Coast and expects to return towards the end of the week. Air William Doughty, of Wellington, who lias been visiting in Gisborne, has returned South. Airs C. A. Fenwick had numerous young people at her resilience last Thursday to do patriotic-doll; dressing. Some most beautiful (creations were made for the fair waxen ladies. Airs lletirv White had lied Cross workers at her home last Thursday. The hostess provided delicious afternoon tea, and the work being finished sooner than anticipated, delight-lid games of tennis were much enjoyed on an asphalt court. Dr. I’orier was given a I'arrivall by the Scottish Society last week. General regret, was expressed at his departure. Dr Porter leaves Gisborne shortly for Scotland. To-day (Wednesday) is the anniversary of the great war. and a function suitable for the occasion will be hold at the Band Rotunda on the Esplanade this afternoon. A resolution will be passed undertaking to carry to a victorious end the campaigns in the maintenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which arc the common and sacred cause of the Allies. 1 lie Band will he in attendance, and will play various National Anthems. It is expected that all loyal subjects will be present. T 1 r K -GIbBORN K K 1! AK KSl* EAR E CLUB People of the artistic temperament always look forward to the Gisborne Shakespeare Club's public readings. There were numerous enthusiasts present last Tuesday evening in the Parish Hail when ‘‘Hamlet” was produced. The frequent rounds- of applause from the audience signified their appreciation of the performance. There was a whole volume of wisdom lontained in souk* of the quotations. For example, when Hamlet says to Horatio, ‘-There are more tilings in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt- of in your philosophy.” The advice of Pnlonius to his son is also well worth retaining in one's memory : “'Lake each man’s censure. but reserve tli.v judgment,” amt "Give every man thy ear, hut lew thv voice.” "This above all, to thine own self be true, aml it must follow as the night tin- day thou eanst not then be Mdse to any man.” The stage was most charmingly fitted up as a drawing room with a cosily carpeted lloor and low seated chairs. The floral arrangements were much admired fiy every one. Beautiful golden wattle,. bamboo and greenery of all kinds were usd in profusion. whilst the artistic- trellis work scheme was most effective, lie wellknown .Shakespearian quotation ‘'Rosemary for Remembrance” was skilfully and beautifully worked out in flag lilies on a picturesque background. Tall vases of golden tinted daffodils completed the pretty decorative scheme. The musical portion of the programme was in capable hands and was very much enjoyed.

The spacious reception rooms and verandah lent themselves to this manner of entertainment and the bright and inspiriting music supplied by Vita Bros, orchestra, was very much appreciated. Delicious afternoon tea and fruit salads were partaken of during a. pleasant interval, and sweets of every kind. Tne hostess received her numerous friends in a delightful toilette of rose pink foulard, with a modish draped waist belt and trimmings of Chantilly. Mrs 11. <le Lautour wore a smart navy tailored costume, and a chic and fashionable hat on suite. Mrs \Y. 1.. Rees wore a black silk toilette, with falconne trimmings and a toque to match. .ills A. Rees wore a marron rabbi Costume effectively designed and a pretty hat with smart trimmings. .Amongst the guests were noticed: Mesdamrs Reeve, Wallis, Dodgslutn, Wilson. I’attullo. O. A 1 )F.LI(; 11T FUL ' A FTE R XOON TEA Mrs Carlyle Wilson .cave a particularly enjoyable afternoon tea last Thursday in the Women’s Club rooms above; tlie J.D.lt. Stores. The "nest of honor was Mrs A. L. Singer. The hostess received her quests in a pretty saxe blue toilette avitli dainty trimmings. Mrs Singer Avorc a golden brown tinted coat and shirt and a pretty black hat. Mrs JI. do Lautour wore a sapphire blue tailored costume and a prune tinted chapeau. The reception .room was most charmingly decorated, spring flowers being in profusion everywhere. Many ot tlm cruosts brought their knitting and Vita.' Bros.’ orchestra played delightfully. A most dainty and delicious afternoon tea was provided, and fruit salads and trifles were partaken ot. Amongst the guests present were: Mesdam.es Coker, Wallis, Agile w - Brown, Gully, Jex-Blnke, Bodgshnn, Blair, W. B. Willoelc, 1C Willock, Thomas, Holdsworth, Winter. Hume, Mann, G.
