PUBLIC WORKS.
USUAL RATE OF PROGRESS. KSTIMATIvS i-REPARED. 15 v Telegraph—Special Correspondent. WELCINtiTON, Aug. 2. “Public works are going on at. the usual rate of progress,” said the Minister for Public Works to-day. “Wherever unemployment is brought under mv notice. work is being found for men.' There is von- little unemployment just now. but 1 think that probably one of the reasons for tins is that .1 put Si Hi men on Government works last month. Our greatest, difficulty is to find employment for artisans, such as painters and plasterers. The amount of employment, which the Government can give to such men is very limited, i hate restarted the road works near Christchurch, part of the cost of which is being paid by the local bodies, and these works are giving employment to a. certain number of married men. Very soon, as the spring advances into summer, there must he a considerable demand for labor from the country settlers and all unemployment iliflieulties should disappear. “Tim Public Works Estimates are all prepared and are now being printed.” Air Eraser continued. ‘‘.l am taking authorities for expenditure in the hope that the money may be available. If we get the- money 1 shall then have "authority to spend it. If we can’t get it. we can't spend. "Last year we were on the same plan and. it worked out vorv successfully.
