DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.
FATAL FALL FROM A TRAIN AT MASTERTON. ' WELL-KNOWN CARTORTON LADY'S SAD END. The whole community of Carterton was shocked and grieved (says the “Wairarapa Daily News” of Friday last) when tho nows spread last night that Mrs Krahagen, wife of Mr A. 11. Krahagen, a highly esteemed Carterton business man, had met her deatn at Mastcrton. Mrs Krahagen was visiting relatives in that town, and was returning home by tho train that leaves the Mastcrton station at about six o’clock. At nearly the same time another train leaves for the north, and Mrs Krahagen evidently got upon the wrong ,train. Discovering her mistake, she jumped off as tho train started, and either fell or her clothing was caught by some obstruction, and she was drawn under the wheels of the next carriage and killed instantaneously. Dr Cook was quickly in attendance, and was only able to confirm the fact after examination that death had occurred instantly. Information of the occurrence was at once sent to Carterton, and the sad task of breaking tho news to the family was given to tho Rev. J. Ward. Methodist minister, of whose church the deceased lady was an earnest member and conscientious worker. Mr Krahagen and his family of three daughters and a son have' the heartfelt sympathy of everyone in Carterton, and numbers of friends and relatives in other parts of the district, in their great bereavement. Tho late Mrs Krahagen was n daughter of one of the earliest settlors of Greytown, the late Mr John Hawke. She grew up and married in this dis trict” and all who knew her felt a great regard for her. No one was more ready to help and cheer others in affliction. Kindly and amiable, gentle and unassuming, she won the esteem of all, and her sudden death under such circumstances has caused deep gi-i'er to many. An inquest was held at. Mastcrton to-day, and a verdict of accidental death recorded. Tho funeral took place on Sunday afternoon last, when a large number of people paid their last tributo.of re spect to a lady who was held in the highest esteem throughout tho district. The late Airs Krahagen was a sister of Mr T. Hawke, of Customhouse Street, Gisborne.
