GROSSED IN LOVE.
MOTOR THIEF’S NOVEL EXCUSE. A prisoner who said ho traced his downfall to a lovo affair was sentenced by Mr Biron to six months’ hard labor at tho Lambeth Police Court. He was William Sidney Wilson, an insurance agent, of Newport Street, Aldershot. He was accused of stealing two motor cars, one from Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, and the other from a college at Petersfiekl. A solicitor who appeared for the defence said the prisoner, would, if h© were given tho opportunity-, join the Aimv and endeavor to retrieve Ins character. Ho traced, his downfall to a love affaii Mr Biron: Really, do you mean to suggest that a man steals two motor cars because lie is crossed in love? The Solicitor: Iti.appears to have deranged his mind a little. Mr Biron: A most extraordinary idea is common in some quarters that the privilege of serving in the British Army is a substitute for imprisonment. It is most astounding. Hero I have a man of military age at a time when the country is at war who is perfectly able to servo. Instead of servj n'g his country ho 'prefers to rob, opU I am told as an adequate explanation that lie has been crossed m love. “‘Really,” the magistrate added, n* is outside the hounds of reason.. There is nothing to be said for hi me Ho i» a contemptible _creature, and I shall send him to prison for six months hard labor, which I hope will do him good.”
