GISBORNE’S ENVIABLE POSITION NO SHORTAGE LIKELY TO OCCUR. An inquiry was made hy a “Times representative at the Defence office yesterday as to the number of men. this district would he called upon to supply to complete the 12.000 troops required from the Dominion before the end of the year. The attention of the Area officer (Lieut. -Moltzed) was also directed to the special telegraph::: message from Auckland printed in vesteruay ,s issue oi tin “Tunes” stating that the Auckland military district would probably be called upon to furnish between 3000 and 4000 men—-cno-q liar ter o<’ the number require! Tim Area Officer replied that up to the present he bad no information save that gleaned from the newspapers that the two extra battalions nad been, accepted for service. lie bad had no information from either the group or the district headquarters on the subject.
In reference to the number of rneu that would he required from the East Coast district, Lieut. Moltzen said that rested entirely upon the number of men registered and passed as medically fit.. Bi-monthly returns are made out of tiie number of men available iron: each area, and these are sent to headquarters. W hen a draft of men is to be called up those returns are referred to and each district is levied according to the numbers available. The Area Officer did not anlieipan- the slightest difficulty would be ( xperienoed whatever the call might be that was made upon the district. 1 he draft to leave on the 22nd coiisif-ting all to id of IMJ men was complete, and there were over 100 men. who had passed medically fit ready 7 to get away when called upon. Besides this number, there w*re also a large number of men who had registered but who had not yet passed tin medical examination. These men would be available when required. 1000 MEN IN A FORTNIGHT. It may be mentioned that a gentleman, who is closely in touch with miidnrv matters s-nd also with the potentialities of tho district, has ventured the opinion that the available .supply o’ iiicu :re.:: tin* Fist Coast dL-tric: L, a.- yet been hardly toadied.. 11-- ! -i L- v- - that were they urgi .: : mur-and mounted •■< uld •> : i .i-d from trie district it: ' ,!-tnight. i ii:? opinion is a v,;!t:::b. • i-.ne. f■ :-r it clearly deiaon-;-Ll;t S L■: , vitb lie number of men avrii l ’-: ■ r M y there* i*; no likelihood of ny -horieg. : a ihe supply hi i..i ;i .
