RACING AND THE WAR.
C.J.CVs PATRIOTIC ACTION. \LL PROFITS FUR THK WAR !• LANDS. (Press Association Telegram.} CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 13. A snceial general meeting of the rnemhcVs of the Lanterbury Jockey Chib was held this afternoon to consider the question of giving the whole of the not profit of the chib for the financial year ending April 30th. 1916. to the fund or funds connected with tiie war. Mr W. F. M. Bucldev (president or the Club) was in the chair, and there was a very largo and representative attendance* of members. The president formally moved a motion to contribute the whole of the profits of the club for the rear to the fund or funds connected with the war. Mr F. A. Pyne, in seconding the motion, said he v.-.m delighted to see the large attendance there that day. He hoped that there would be a unanimous vote on the question at issue. In England racing iiac! _ been practical! v stonpeo. but lie did not advocate that here, as it would be disastrous to many employees who could not do anything else. .If they gave all their profits to the war fund, itwould be a popular action, and itwould cut the ground from a large section of the community who thoughtthat all racing should be stopped. The average profits of the club for the last eight'Tears had been approximately £4OOO per year, and there was fair reason to suppose that a sum approximate to that could be donated. _ The motion was carried unanimously. * Mr C. Reid moved that in any ease a minimum sum of £2OOO bo guarnnteed to the war f muls. ‘I his also carried.
