POSITION OF FIRST ENGINEER
AIR J. AIILLICR APPOINTED
A speeiitT meeting of the Gisborne Harbor Board was held., at noon yesterday to deal with the appointment of a first engineer for the dredge Maui, through Air H. A. Lovestam, of Westport, notifying that he had decided not to aci'cpt the position. There were present: Messrs J. Townley (Chairman), A. H. Wallis, T. I-lolden, J. W. ,1. Preston, R. G. Hallamore, A. Al. Lewis, J. Brown, and G. Smith.
The Chairman explained that Air Lovestam, as a result of applying for the position, had received bettor terms from the Westport Harbor Board to remain in their service. The Board had carefully gone through the applications again in committee, and had decided to recommend that Air J. Aliller, of Oamaru, lie appointed to the position of first engineer of the Alaui. He moved that the Board confirm Air Miller's appointment. He considered the Board had made a wise choice.
Air J. Brown seconded -the motion, which was. carried unanimously.
Mr Miller Vas in charge of tlio dredge Progress at Oamara for 13 years, until the Oam arn Harbor Hoard ceased dredging operations. Since then he has been relieving in the Fruhling dredge Canterbury in .Lyttelton Harbor. He lias also bad experience of dredging on gold dredges, having been in charge of the erection and dredging engineer on tho Manuhirikia at Alexandra, on the Molyneux river. He is aged '45, and is a married man, with four children. He completed liis apprenticeship with the London and Glasgow Engineering and Iron Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, in 1.900, and while with that company was engaged to take charge of the. completion of -three ships, two twin-screw gunboats and a twin-screw cruiser of 10,000 1.H.P., built by the Company for lI.M. Navy at Devonport .Dockyard. During that period Mr Miller had entire control of all the workmen, including the making out of time-sheets and paying all monies for wages and other accounts, and also conducted the correspondence with the firm. In a testimonial, the firm stated that ho had given unqualified satisfaction, both to the dockyard officials and. themselves. They stated that they were very sorry to lose Mr Miller’s services, and confidently recommended him to anyone requiring a skilful and reliable engineer, as much for nis business tact as for his capabilities as an engineer. Mr Miller also holds high testimonials from Mr It. M&yston, Engineer of H.M. Dockyard, Devonport. He was chief engineer on several Home boats, and holds high testimonials from the owners of each. In a most- complimentary testimonial, Mr J. Mill, of Port Chalmers, says of Mr Miller: "He has been thoroughly tried, and as a dredgemaster I consider him second to none rbf the "many I have met in my long colonial experience.”
