AUCKLAND, Jan. o. The Hon. R. J. Bollard, in a statement to-night concerning trouble vith tne -Natives at Taupe over fishing rights, said the interests of the -Natives lin’d been closely watched b> the Government, and he was pleased to sav that not only were the majority of the Maoris complying with the terms of the agreement and the legislation passed, but also many of t win * were rendering valuable assistance in r" carrying the Act into force, ‘‘liiesc Natives,’’ continued Mr Bollard, “have shown a fine spirit, but 1 regret, however, that a few of 'beta still fail to recognise that an honorable agreement; was entered into, and that by interfering with anglers they are committing a breach ol the inland are liable to penalties provided. 1 take this opportunity of stating that- the Government has taken unusual pains to explain the position fully, and that in the ’nterests both cf anglers and of Natives, it is intended to enforce the law stricUv. and.any Natives from now onwards found interfering with fishermen in breach of the law will be prosecuted. 1 hope it will not -,-ocome mf< .ary for the Government to take extreme measures, arid that tiie Natives who have been interfering v.ith_ anglers will realise it is in their own interest* not to interfere, -aid to -I'.-w anglers to fish in the Taupo district fisheries without further molestation. 1 should not like to see prosecution*, take place.”—P.A.
