FELL OFF THE ENGINE

When the New Brighton fire bri-
gade, which attended a fire last night, .stopped at a water plug it-was round that one member of the engine crew, \Y. H. Tooley, was missing. A motorist who was attracted by ilie blaze was proceeding to the hre and found the fireman unconscious on the road.
It appears that as the engine 'was nearing the water plug Tooley lilted the reel oh intending to drop it on the ground ready for running out. In doing so he ieil, but tne fall was not noticed by the other members of the engine '-row. and the engine t|’- a not stop. Tooley suffered injuries to the head and back. The fire was at Palmer Road. North Beach, an unoccupied house belonging to F. Peters being destroyed.—P.A.
death from HEART FAILL Ri WHILE SWIMMING
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 6. Joseph Herbert Glentworth _ (IP 1 , suddenly expired while attempting to swim across the V aiwakaiho River at New Plymouth to-day. .He and other voting men had twice crossed the river, and were returning when the others saw Glentworth fling up his arms and sink in fifteen feet m water. The body was later recovered From deen water where it- was held against the hank by the. pressure of the current. Medical opinion was that Glentworth died from heart failure, for which he had been treated. as he had not breathed under water. —P. A.
