UNEMPLOYMENT
QUIETEST JANUARY KNOWN
OVER 600 WORKLESS IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, Jan. 9. # Always a quiet period in certain trades, January this year has opened to a somewhat acute situation m unemployment among unskilled workers and certain classes of skilled operatives in Auckland. It is described by the official ot one union as the quietest January he has known sirtce 1918. The a c Lml total of unemployed is not available, but it is believed to exceed that tor December, which was 616. Over 400 laborers are out of work according to the records of the Labor Bureau, 'and the books of the General Laborers’ Union. Many of the men have been idle for many months, and their ranks have been swelled by an influx of workless laborers from the country. Not very many city laborers are taking advantage of offers of work in the country, although a number of single men have done so. The building trades are experiencing slackness following on an active periodVlt is stated that the erection of a number of houses has been deferred; .and this has added to the painters, carpenters, and laborers out <sf work.
