BOROUGH ROADS

LAST MONTH’S WORK

A resume of the work carried out on the Borough reads during the month of December was given in the following report submitted by the Engineer, Mr A. Young, to the Borough Council last evening: - MAINTENANCE,

Maintenance work has been carried out as follows:—Street cleaning; watering ;tpd patching various streets; reinstatement of footpaths broken up for the installation of kerbside petrol pumps; cleaning drains Town Kaiti and Whatuupoko areas; chipping footpaths Gladstone Road and Peel streets: gravelling footpath Clifford Street; cutting grass, town, AA’hataupoko and Kaiti areas and Kutene Road reserve; repairing Roebuck road bridge; dumping metal ex railway trucks ; screening chips ; tarring Upper Childers Road and repairing carts. LOAN WORKS. Ormond Road.—Bitumen grouted paving, 12ft on either side of train line, Stafford Street to tram terminus. The work has been completed with the exception of the seal coat, which will be applied as soon as tho weather permits. Fitzherbert Street: Bitumen grouted paving of .area around silent policeman; 50 per cent, of this work has been completed. Kaiti Esplanade.—Bitumen grouted paving between Win. Pettie Bridge and Rawiri Street: work is in progress. Salisbury Road.—The paving of the west end of this road, including footpaths, in gravel has been completed. Alain Street.—Gravelled paving work Ims been taken in hand. Streets Construction by Contract, — The contractors (the Neuchatel Asphalt Co. Ltd.) have intimated thenintention to start work almost immediately. Stormwater Drains.- —In connection wiTTi the construction of underground stormwater drains throughout the borough, for which a loan of £50.C00 was authorised and of which £24,700 was raised, I have to report that the major portion of this -work is completed. The areas where new street paving is to he done were taken in hand first. Up to the present approximately 24 miles of storm water drains have been laid. The report was adopted.
