Facts in favor of. the inland railway route between Gisborne tina \\ mroa were brought forward by some members of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce who with the president Mi H. F. Forster, waited on Mr. H. llodic. commercial manager ot the New Zealand Railways Department, who is at present in Gisborne. It was pointed out that the inland route would tap rich fertile pastoral lands which the coastal route would miss. Mr. Rodifc stated he- could give no reply to the deputation’s representation's as lie had to submit a report to Wellington. While in the district Air Rodie will also investigate, the commercal possibilities cr the Gis-borne-Bav- of Plenty route.

A question arising out of the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act. 1926. came before a meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when Mr. L.° J. Coham made application through liis solicitors, Messrs Burnard and Bull, for the Council to take over his motor-omnibus service and plant. The application was based on the section of the Act which entitles any ’bus properietor running in substantial competition to a tramway system to require the local body controlling the trams to take over the 'bus service at valuation.—Mr. Coham values his plant, which includes five motor buses, at £3,230. —On the motion of the Mayor, the mnttei was referred to the works committee to seek the advice cf the Borough’s solicitors. The question of setting aside a camping ground for visiting motorists was brought up at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, following on a letter from Mr. G. Orawshaw, secretary of the Gisborne branch of the Auckland Automobile Association. —The Mayor reported that arrangements had been made with Mr. Charles Wliiteley, caretaker of the cricket oval, to take charge of the eastern end of the Victoria Domain where visiting motorists would he allowed to camp upon payment ot 2/6 a day per car. Ample conveniences and water supply had been provided at the eastern end of the Domain.—“ You don't want to consider them too much; there are the boarding houses to be considered, said Or. Toneycliffe.—The discussion then lapsed.

“The Germans are a thoroughly businesslike people,” said an Auckland resident, Mr. H. B. Jenkins, who has recently returned from a tour abroad. The comment was made in regard to the rapid recovery of German oversea trade and particularly on the vast- quantity of German toys which flooded New Zealand for Christmas giving. “Yes” said Mr. Jenkins, “they are wonderfully busi-ness-like not in any cringing servile way as with some other peoples, but in the proper way. If they were placed in a similar economic position as other European Powers they would be on top in no time. The German people had had a bad time under Junker rule, and they are never likely to go back to it. They were treated worse than negroes in the Southern States of America. They will never forget it, and they will not allow Junkerism in power again.”— Special. In order to afford country people an opportunity of visiting the seaside and other places of interest in Gisborne, the Pailway Department is running a fast- passenger train from Metuhora on Sunday next, January 16, leaving Motuhora at 7.30 a.m. and arriving at Gisborne at 9.45 a.m. The train will stop where required for passenger traffic. Return train leaves Gisborne at 4 p.m., arriving Motuhora at 6.50 p.m. Cheap excursion tickets, available for day of issue, will be issued to Gisborne from Motuhora 'and intermediate stations. The ordinary second-class return fares from Motuhora and Matawai to Gisborne are 10/6 and 9/6, whereas the special excursion fare will be 6/7 and 5/11 respectively. Similar reduction applies in the case of other stations. The Sunday train is being given a trial and may b© repeated if found remunerative.' Particulars are advertised in this issue.

“I think that the officers might have come forward with these suggestionis before the by-laws were printed and published,” said Cr. Coleman at the Borough Council meeting last evening when a report was submitted by the engineer which stated that the traffic inspector considered that the site of the Customhouse Street parking place should he changed. “This matter is getting almost as had as the taxi stands used to be,” continued Cr. Coleman.— The matter was referred to the works committee.
