Portecus, who has taken over the Tatapouri Hotel, is wellknown to many Gisborne residents as he commanded the ilav.ke’s Bay company of the Second Battalion, Wellington Regiment, through the Somme in 1920. Air. C. E. Armstrong has been ap»pointed to act as a member of the Whakaki Drainage Commission which sits at Wairoa on Jonuary 23. Messrs Thompson (Public Works engineer at Napier) and P. Hamilton < Government Valuer) will be the other members of the Commission.
At a special meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night, Dr. .Jas. Thomson, AI.A., A 1.8.. Cnß. or Glasgow University, was appointed medical superintendent of the* Dunedin hospital. Dr. Alex Gillies, of London, was appointed senior resident medical officer.—P.A. Mr. It. Robertson was re-appointed borough representative to the Gisborne High School Board or Governors, at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Cr. I). V. A pleasing function took place at the conclusion of the practice or the Gisborne orchestra on Monday evening, when Airs. D. J. Parker took me opportunity to present a handsome gold-mounted pencil and a leather wallet to the conductor, Air. \\ yke. in recognition and appreciation or the help he had given the orchestra. After the presentation and reply, a pleasant evening was spent in social intercourse; songs were given by Airs Parker (2) and Clare: "cello duets ay Alessrs Parnell and Aloore: instrumental quartets by Glover.
