A GOOD SALE . SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN PRICES ‘ ' WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. The third of the series of wool sales to be held in Wellington commenced last evening, when three catalogues were submitted. There was a full bench of buyers, and bidding was extremely keen and occasionally animated. It cannot be said that any one section of the trade dominated the situation. Everyone seemed anxious ■ to buy. Bradford and the Continent were keen operators. It is considered that the reserves were in some cases higher than waiTanted by the market conditions. Nevertheless, it was a good sale. Early’ indications suggest an improvement in the price, some experts placing it at a halfpenny and others at one -farthing. The sale was continued to-day. Later. ANIMATED BIDDING THROUGHOUT. EAST COAST CROSSBREDS NOT UP TO AVERAGE QUALITY. WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. The wool sales continued to-dav. There was animated bidding throughout. Half-breds of all descriptions were in strong demand from local mills and Continental operators .Merinos and half-breds were of good character, but crossbreds from the Wairarapa and the East Coast were not up to average of a good season. Fine and medium crossbreds of super style and condition were wanted for America. Inferior medium crossbreds were competed for by Bradford and the Continent. Merinos sold well at strong competition between local mills and Bradford. Ninety-eight per cent, of the offering sold under the hammer-—-P. A - Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., report as under on their sale held at Wellington on January 12 : “Our catalogue was very attractive. There wa.s soirited competition. Bradford buying "strongly; Continent buying on all shabby wools. r I hrec catalogues were sold, totalling U,OuU bales. The market was stronger, probablv oar to halfpenny up on coarse and half-penny to one penny on fine wools above forty-eights. Sometimes higher on extra super lots. There was a keen demand for pieces and lambs, good lots, the latter making between 15d and 16d.”
THIRD NAPIER. SALE ON MONDAY
OVER 7000 BALES OP POVERTY BAY WOOL
The third Napier sale of the season, which takes place _ next Monday, will bib easily the biggest of the season, over 29,000 . bales having been catalogued. This quantity Includes 7064 bales of Poverty. Bay wool,' the greater part of which is in very good condition. The allotment for Poverty Bay was 8000 bales, but owing to the wet weathei it was found impossible to have the whole of this wool shipped before the closing of the catalogue. the fall allotment of 22,000 bales for Hawke’s Bav was secured some time ago. Buyers are expected to arrive in Napier during the week-end, and the sale itself will commence on Monday evening. . . Competition was verv keen,, and compared with the closing prices on the mainland in D'ecemher fine. Merinos advanced 10 pa r cent., other merinos from par 1o 5 per cent.
