AMATEUR ATHLETICS. _ GISBORNE CLUB’S EVENING MEETING. For the first time in it*.existence the Gisboime Amateur-Athletic and Harrier Club held a sports meeting on the Oval last evening. The new location proved to be ideally suited to the purpose, so far as the spectators are concerned, but for the runners the track was rather hard. There was a very large attendance of the public, the majority ef whom secured an excellent view from stand. Three events were held, a 75 yards men’s handicap, 75 yards girls’ handicap and a 440 yards cycle race. Prior to'the commencement of tho racing the supervisor, Mr. P. Fulton, introduced R. W. Lamb, Australia’s champion cyclist to the crowd, the announcement being received with prolonged applause. Lamb bad arrived only an hour jireviously from Hastings, but insisted on journeying out to the Oval to make the acquaintanceship of the local officials and competitors. The meeting was successful from every viewpoint for which much credit must be given.the officials, who were as follows: Judges, Messrs J. R. Kirk, H. F. Forster, and A. S. Parker; time-keepers, Messrs W, Wareham, A. W. Mason and J. Harvey; supervisor, Mr, P. Fulton; referee, Mr. O. Brown, starter, Air. L. Houlahan, stewards, Messrs A. Rice, F. Herbert and W. Jenkins. Following are the results, the number of competitors being given _ in parentheses:— 75yds. Men’s Handicap.—First heat (5): L. Siltcliffe liyds., 1; C. McDonald 71yds., 2; W. McDonald, 51yds., 3. Won by a yard. Time, 8 2-5 .secs. 1 Second heat (4): A. Thorpe, I 61yds., 1; H. Martin, 11yds., 2; B. Thompson, 51yds., 3. Won by half a yard. Time, 8 1-osecs. Third heat (4): L. Smith 61yds., 1; F. Truman, 2yds., 2; O. Paltridge, scr., 3. Won by inches. Time Bsec. Final: A. Thorpe 1; L. Smith 2; F. Truman 3. A great finsh, Thorpe winning by six inches, with half a yard between second and third, the other three competitors finishing within a yard of the third man. Time Bsec. 75yds. Girls’ Handicap.—First heat (5): Miss N. Eastwood, scr., 1; Miss E. Denton, syds., 2; Miss J. Haisman, 6yds., 3. Won by a yard and a-half. Time 9sec. Second heat (4): Miss H. Hansen, Iyd. and Miss N. Janssen, 13vds., equal, 1. Time, 9 l-ssec. Final: Miss Eastwood 1; Miss Hansen 2; Miss Janssen 3. Another good finish. Miss ' Eastwood came through in the last ten yards and won by a clear yard, with Miss Janssen inches behind Muss .Hansen. Time, 9sec. „ „ , 44Uvds. Cycle Handicap.—First heat (5): J. Mercer, 22yds., 1: JDouglas scr., 2, McMahon 12yds and F. Pollard 10yds, fell Won by twenty yards. Time 38sec. Second heat (4): H. Swann, Byds., 1; G. McCoy, 16yds., 2. Won by eight -yards/ Time, 36sec. Final: J. D_ougLs 1: C. McCoy 2; H, Swan 3. A close finish, the riders being well bunched fifty yards Trom honie,.,when Douglas proved the_ best sprinter and won by five yards. Time, 36 4-5.
