GISBORNE CLUB BROWN WINS DOUBLES SCULLS The race between S. Brown and R. Hanna for the T. R- Gordon double-sculling trophies conducted by the Gisborne Club last evening, resulted in a win for Brown and Ins bow, A. West. The two pairs were well matched, and with the twolength lead which lie * gained by means of his 4scc handicap, Brown staved off Hanna’s repeated challenges,. eventually winning by 11 couple of lengths. The tidal conditions could not have been improved, and both pairs showed good rowing form, though the strain of chasing an invisible opponent told heavily on the losers. Hie pace was on. j from the start, Brown endeavouring to make the most of his early advantage, and slightly improving in the first halt ot tlie course. Hanna and his bow, C. F Horne, had a formidable task over the last half, hut though they could make no impression on their opponents, stuck well to the job, and. finished with a good hurst of speed. Brown was on the box seat, being able to take bis speed from Hanna, who was always under his eye. Crews will bo selected this evening for the next series-, the President’s Fours. This is the chief event of the club season, second only in importance to the regatta racing, and competition will be keen. Entries for tho event will close definitely this evening..
