AYATERSIDER’S DEATH. INQ UEST AD J 0 F RNED. An inquiry into the death of Aleke Matutaera, commonly known as “Big Mac,” who died at the. Look Hospital on Saturday following injuries received in the roadstead while working on the Arawa on Jan. 4 was opened before the District Coroner Atr. E. C. Levvoy S.AL yesterday. Atr. L. T. Burnard appeared for the widow and Air. J. S. Mauchop watched the proceedings on behalf of the Shaw Savill and Albion Coy, owners of the Arawa.
Evidence was given to the effect that her husband was a laborer and a shearer and also worked on the waterfront. On Jan. 4 lie left home in gefbd health for the wharf. t\ itness next heard he was injured at the Hospital. She was not allowed to see her husband till two days later when he told her he had been'working the winch when the rope broke and something fell on him. The inquiry was adjourned till Sat. Jan. 22.
STABBED WITH POCKET KNIFE. WELLINGTON. Jan. 17. Ernest Ditleve Pederson was admitted to 12 months' probation for stabbing Stanley John (Yells, trainer. The boxer Jamito gave evidence that Pederson had an altercation with a friend of witness's. (Veils interfered and struck accused, who stabbed (Yells with a pocket knife. COLLISION BETWEEN CAR AND MOTOR CYCLE.
HAMILTON, Jan. 17. On the Tirau read, near Okoroire, a collision occurred on Sunday evening between a motor ear and a motor cycle and a side car. I’. B. Smith, butcher, of Thames, driver of the latter, had his leg fractured in two places.—P.A SUDDEN DEATH AFTER BATHING. WAIPUKARAU, Jan. 17. A fatality occurred on the property of Air Harry Parsons, “Happy Home,” Wallingford, yesterday afternoon, Reginald Copley, 24, expiring suddenly after bathing. Copley, who was married in July last, had been employed for eight years on this station. Deceased’s parents reside in Auckland and, were formerly in Wanganui. An inquest will be held this afternoon —P.A. STRUCK IN-EYE WITH AIR GUN PELLET. WHAKATANE, Jan. 17. A painful accident occurred in Whakatane yesterday to Charlie Bryenton, a son of Air E. W. Bryenton, of Taneatua. The boy had been spending a holiday in (Vhakatane with friends, and with other boys was engaged in shooting at a target with an airgun. He accidentally came in the lino of fire and received a pellet in the eye. He was treated by Dr 7\ppleby, who ordered the lad’s removal to Auckland for further X-ray treatment.—P.A LABORER’S FALL ON PICKAXE HAMILTON, Jan. 17. Charles White.. 28, a laborer, was admitted to the Waikato hospital suffering from injuries to his side, and chest through falling on a pickaxe while working at Arapuni. DEPRESSION LEADS TO SUICIDE
TIMAJLUf, -Jan. 17. On Saturday afternoon Sydney E. Nicliolls, 33, a stock agent, of T'niaru, borrowed a gun, explaining that he wanted to shoot hates. Shortly afterwards his body was found on the roadside, one hand grasping the gun, and with a large hole in his head. At the inquest the coroner returned a verdict that death had been caused by a gunshot wound self inflicted, whilst deceased was hi a : state of depressed mind.—KA.
