BATTLE IN MEXICO

FEDERAL TROOPS CAPTURE CATHOLIC STRONGHOLD OVER 100 DEAD EiIMSCOPATEIIENIES RESPONSIBILITY MEXICO CITY, Jan. 17. After a bloody fight Federal troops captured the town of Tepatilan, in the Jalisco district, the centre of what the Government calls the “Catliolio rebellion”. The dead number nearly 100. Seventy of those dead were rebels. They laid siege to Tepatilan, but the relieving Government forces arrived, and drove them off with many wounded. The Government is arming the peasants in the States where the rebels are active.

The Catholic' episcopate denies responsibility for the outbreaks. Demaso Bazzara, a prominent Car tholic leader, who was heading the revolt in the Mesquital district under a banner “For God and Country” was killed in the battle.—A. and N.Z.C.A.

ANOTHER HUNDRED REBELS KILLED

(Received Jan. 18, 9.30 p.m,) MEXICO CITY, Jan. 17. A hundred rebels were killed in the Jiattle with the Ftederal troops near Tepatilan in Jalisco State in addition to one hundred reported killed on Sunday.
