The first day of the Wairoa Racing Club’s annual meeting opened today in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance. NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the Times.) \VAIROA, Jan. 18. In the Trial Handicap Night Gambler was baclly left when the barrier went up. Dreamy shot out well to the front and soon established a two lengths’ lead, ivith Voltore next and Gold Streak close up. Near the bend into the straight Gold Streak challenged the leader, and quickly drew level. Half-way up the straight the chestnut gelding came right away and won by three lengths, with Night Gambler and Taukari fighting out a great finish for second place, the former getting a long neck advantage and the rest of the field bunched close behind.
The Te Knpenga Hack Handicap saw a good start. Carniola and Waioeka Jack showed in front immediately, with Tinomaunga in close attendance and Gold Dot last. Coming round tire back stretch Carniola came away, but AVaioeka Jack put in a 1 challenge entering the straight and a neck and neck race saw Nixon lash his mount past the post by a neck from Tinomaunga, who came up cn the outside, gaining second place by lengths from Carniola. In the AVairoa Handicap a good start saw the ‘three horses leave at half-pace, but they quickly got into their stride. The order round the back stretch was Pita, Morose ; nd Princess Kata. The last-mentioned then moved up, but Morose displaced her at the five furlong peg. Princess Nata, however, came along with great speed, and shot , ahead coming into the straight, and going on v. on easily by four lengths. Morose beat Pita for second place by a length. In the Maiden Hack Scurry Tan took the lead from the bnrriei, tux Night Gambler and*"King's Dream quickie overhauled the leader. . Comma- into the straight King’s Dream displaced'Tan, but only temporarily, for the latter made her run, and '-on by half a length, with Singer Boy just squeezing home from Night Gambler by a head and the other horses all close behind In the Telephone Hack Handicap Nio-ht Song got away first, but Tinomauinni soon closed up with Hmekanua in close attendance. Corning round the final bend Gold Streak came to the front, but could not last, for coming up the straight Tinomaunga’s fast finish landed her a winner by half a length w.tli Night Song running into second place ' old Streak falling back to third portion. In the Stewards’ Handicap all three horses came away together, but Nmawati soon took the lead, amt maintained it throughout. Downie Stewart, has decided to allow the New r Brighton Trotting Club to hold -a meeting at Addington during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Christchurch, the Ccintcrbury Jockey Oluh is still negotiating with a view to obtaining permission to hold a Royal race meeting at Riccarton. It is considered that in the action he has taken in regard to the change of dates of meetings, the Minister has exceeded his powers, as the allocation of the dates is the duty of the New' Zealand Racing Conference.—P.A.
