PRISON ESCAPEES

EXCITE ATEN T AT HAMILTON. TWO YOUNG AIEN AT LARGE. HAMILTON, Jan. IS. A sensational escape from custody was made early this morning by the two young men, George Huia Brewer and George Curtis, who were in ihe lockup at the Hamilton polic-e station on remand on charges of the licit ol a car. Accused were , before the Court yesterday and were Mue to appear again on Thursday night. ’J he constable paid the usual pi-nodical visits to the cell during the night, and at 5 a.m. discovered the two men missing. Several floor boards which had been ripped from their fastenings and a heap of earth scooped from beneath indicated the method of their escape. Even then the exit was very narrow, and it must have been difficult wont worming their way through. A small portion of the weather-boardiig which obstructed the passage was smashed. The cell is in a wooden building situated 10yds in the rear ol the station. Brewer and Curtis, it will be remembered, were arrested in Frankton last Friday night on charges of the theft of aii Essex car from Ohaupo. Brewer had escaped from custody when arrested at Te Awamutu on Thursday with Petersen, another Borstal 'hoy, who was also charged with the theft of another car, and who was remanded to Auckland. Petersen was escorted there yesterday. The country is being scoured by the police for the escapees. Brewer is sft lOin in height, with fair’hair and an open countenance/ and was dressed in a light grey suit, with glace patent shoes. Curtis is dark, sharp featured, sft Sin, unshaven, and was wearing a dark grey tweed suit. Both arc of good appearance, and are aged about 20 years. Neither was wearing a hat.—P.A.
