LONDON SALES. C ROSSBREDS PAR TO /> PER CENT or'. LONDON, Jan. 18. At the wool sales there was an excellent selection of greasy combing merinos and a fairly representative lot of scoureds. The bulk of the crossbreds were medium lower sorts. There was a large attendance and good competition. Germany was the principal operator. Good gi’easy merinos met with strong Continental competition. Prices were par to 5 per cent, above the December closing rates for ordinary average sorts and scoureds were unchanged. Crossbreds met with a strong Continental and Yorkshire demand at par to 5 per cent, advance. A New Zealand clip, “Tarata,” made 17id (highest) and lo£d (average).— \ N Z.C.A
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., are in receipt of the following cable from their London office, under date January 18: —“There was a good attendance at the opening sales to-day. Competition by Home and Continental buyers was active and prices as compared with the close of the preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, higher for merino and in sellers’ favor for greasy crossbred and scoured crossbred. There was a better market for slipe crossbred. Opening catalogues were representative.” Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their head office, London, dated January 18:—“The London wool sales .opened with animated competition, a large attendance of buyers, and a good selection. Belgian, French and German buyers are operating activelv. Home trade buyers are buying any suitable lots. As compared with last series closing rates liner merino wools are Id higher; other descriptions of merino wool par to Id higher'; crossbred fine wool par to Id higher; crossbred medium and coarse wool, prices unchanged; slipe wools, prices "unchanged; for pieces there is good demand from the Continental buyers.” The London office of the Bank ot New Zealand cables that the wool sales have opened with strong competition and a large attendance of buyers. Ruahine shut out.” NAPIER SALES. The N.Z. Loan Co. report: “Wool sale. There was an excellent sale. Bidding was spirited general. Prices, compared with Wellington, were, for fine wool halfpenny to threefarthings better. Crossbred wools were a farthing to a halfpenny better. We sold under the hammer 98 ner cent, of our catalogue.”
