MYSTERY MURDER

POLICEMAN AND WOMAN. SOUTH BRISBANE CRIME. NO SOLUTION. SYDNEY, Dec. 31. Deep mystery, which a week's strictest inquiry by actect-ives has failed to fathom in the' slightest degree, siurounus the murder, uite last Thursday night, of Sergeant Cummings, oi South Brisbane police, and Mis- Eileen Gladys Walsh. Their bodies were discovered at the rear of Boggo Road Gaol, South Brisbane, on Friday morning (Christmas Eve). They were lying within a yard of each other, and all the indications nointed to the fact that they Averc attacked unaAvares and shot down before they saAv their assailant. There Averc no signs of a struggle, and no firearm lias been found, but the bullet avouiuls Avere in the centre of the neck, beloAV the base of the skull. Driver Mead and Fireman burner, creAV of a passing train, saAA’ the bodies there early on Friday morning AA'hen they Avere on their way to Roma Street station. They communicated Avitli the police, and posses oi detectives and other police were immediately dispatched, avlio found the bodies lying face upAvards, with the heads pointing towards the gaol Avails. . The reserve on Avhicli tnev were found is about 200 yards lonjj and 10.) yards Avide, and is used as a sports ground. It was carefully combed by the police for any evidence of who may have been responsible tor tlie me, AA'itliout success. Not even a cartridge shell Avas found there, nor Avere there any tracks Avhicli could be identified in particular. Services of a Avell-knoAvn and successful tracker in the service of the Queensland police Avere requisitioned, but though he spent a dav on the scene he Avas unlo to find anything of value. Mrs. Walsh was 31 years of egomarried, and living apart from hei husband. She had been staying in South Brisbane with her mother and sister, and the police immediately sought her husband. He Avas oven tually discovered eating a meal in a city restaurant, but he was able to prove that lie Avas noA\heie ncai ie scene at the time. Cummings was 53 years of age, anci ed with liis wife and children at Woolloonabba. There is no suggestion so far as can o r.Tftertained, that Cummings had been paying any special attention to Mrs*. Walsh, and it is suggested in some quarters that he Avas interv icaa ing her with the prospect of getting some information regarding a case on "which he was working. his is borne out by the fact that he was still in his uniform. Ii is argued that if there was anything between them he would not be likely to meet her in his uniform. In that case the motive lor the crime may have been the foai "’a the sergeant and Mrs. W alsh km too much, and the scope of the detectives’ inquiries has been consequently widened to embrace that possibility. So far they have been uncble to get any light on the mystery, and the conviction is gaming giounc that it Avill never he solved.
