SURF TRAGEDY

YOUNG MAN AND YOUNG WOMAN DROWNED. LEARNING TO SWIM IN DANGEROUS SEA. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 20. Greenmeadows Beach, Opunake, was the scene of a surf tragedy this evening, Mary Doreen Hammond, aged 26 years, and Thomas Pennington, 28 years, both of Mangatoki, being drowned. The girl called at a bach on the beach and asked for a rope and belt, as she was going to be taught to swim. She was warned by Mr N. It. McKenzie (New Plymouth) that the sea was dangerous, and was advised to swim in the river, but she said she liked the sea. The couple were seen to go into the sea, hut were presently missed. Mr McKenzie immediately rang the Opunake Life Saving Club, half a mile away, and in twenty minutes a team was on the spot. The body of the girl was found floating on the surface, hut the effort’s of a doctor for half-an-liour failed to revive any sign of life. Men were patrolling the beach tonight, but at a late hour there was 110 trace of the mail’s body. 111 the commends ble rescue attempt, a member of the team, George Mayor, got into difficulties, but was brought ashore bv his brother Jack.
