Probationers’ “Time”

IS THREE MONTHS ADEQUATE? DISCRETIONARY POWER WANTED. The executive of the Hospital Board’s Association have recommended that matrons ho given discretionary power to extend the probationaij period of any nurses for a further period of not less than three months according to a letter received by the Cook Hospital Board yesterday. “At present,” explained the chairman. “we take probationers on lor three months and if they did not wish to proceed with the training they left the institution. The Hospital Boards’ Association is now asking that the probationary period be extended by another three months.” Mr D. tV. Coleman pointed out that the reason for the Hospitals Association’s request was that the New Zealand Trained Nurses’ Association had recently requested that the pro_ bationary period should be extended from three to six months. This Board, however, had acted on the recommendation of the Medical Superintendent and the Matron in deciding that three months’ probation was sufficient. He -pointed out that the Matron had power to recommend the Board to extend the probationship of any nurse and there was little doubt but that the Board would act on it. It was decided to proceed on the present lines.
