RECENT OUTBREAK. DEPARTMENT WILL NOT REIMBURSE BOARDS. The epidemic of diphtheria in the autumn of last year involved the Cock Hospital Board in unanticipated expenditure totalling £IOOO for treatment of patients. Recently the Board applied to the Department for reimbursement of that amount by a special grant, but the Minister of Health and his Department hold that such a step would create a precedent, and further that, a hospital board must do its duty to patients suffering from infectious diseases in the same way as the treatment of other cases. The Director-General of Health advised the Board yesterday to the above effect. The letter was received.
