THIS DAY’S TELEGRAMS. [Per Press Agemow, t Dunedin, sept 5. An exciting walking match between Edwards and Young Scott, aged fourteen years, for £SO a-side, distance seven miles, came off in the Drill-shed last evening. Edwards walked first, and did the distance in 61 min llsec, but Young Scott followed and accomplished it in GOmin 26]sccs, thus winning by Napier, September 7. At a meeting held at Poverty Bay, a resolution in favor of abolition was passed unanimously. Dunedin, September 7. The question of the validity of night licenses is at length finally settled. At the quarterly sitting of the Licensing Court today, most of our publicans applied for and were granted night licenses. The applications were made under a provincial Ordinance, passed at the late sitting of the Provincial Council, and recently assented to by the Governor. A fatal accident occurred this afternoon at West Taieri. As the coach passed the Saddle Hill tollbar, one of the horses’ shied and toppled the coach over a twenty feet bank. The driver, Henry Steadman, received serious internal injuries, and died at 2 p.m. There were no passengers in the coach. Kate Malders has been committed for trial at the Queenstown District Court for concealment of birth. She confessed to the doctor and matron of the gaol that she had been delivered of a child. No doubt exists from the statements made, though there is no admissible evidence that the body was thrown into the Shotover. The accused is admitted to bail.
